I work as a realtor in Vermont so I drive constantly through areas with no conveniences (restrooms, etc!) and my bad habit is to store a bag of Sweet Maui Onion potato chips under the passenger seat of my car. If I bring them into my house my husband will eat the entire bag. I have to make sure I lock my car at night so the bears don't find them! They are the only junk food in my otherwise healthy diet, and they are exquisitely delicious and perfect for snacking when driving through the countryside.
Hangry WASP here. I do hide food from my husband, who will just inhale it otherwise. The refrigerator is easy – he only looks at what’s absolutely in front of him, not in the back. I think I’m inherited this trait for my mother – I once found her secret peanut brittle stash hidden under the couch in the living room when I was little. She just said “it’s mommy‘s, and you cannot touch it.” Somehow, I understood it. And now I do it too. Apparently I did it with my brother and sister, too – they called me the food Nazi, but I was not gonna let them eat all the brownies, that I made, in one sitting. I like to savor things over time…
I am such a savor-er, and I take tiny bites, and I eat slowly... people are constantly commenting on it. I do feel bad for our victims (mine and yours), but there are worse things, right?!
I too have secret hiding places. My beloved spouse (French and slim) will eat anything not tied down or attached to a wall, so I do it in order to have that special something to eat when I want it.
Our beloved son (also French and even slimmer), who's in on my game but doesn't play, recently and inadvertently exposed my best hiding place. Now I am desperately looking for an alternative place to hide my small stash.
I actually find this post concerning and rather disturbing, even though you’re making light of it. I hope your therapist agrees (I’m a therapist myself).
I grew up with a mother who hid chocolate. She now lives alone and still hides it. Old habits die hard? I hide the candies that I use for Christmas cookies because if he can find them, my husband will eat them all! I have been known to hide cookies in the freezer. Especially ones from fancy bakeries. And oh yes, I am a WASP and I get very very hangry! Happy to participate in any social experiment on that.
I hide Northfork BBQ chips. Every Friday before I head home from work, I sit in my car, crack open a Spindrift, stick my hand in a bag of chips and get transported to a land of peace and quiet. Calgone, take me away!
Yep! I hide the fresh blueberries from the teenager 🤣
You are the second person who told me they hide fruit from their kids 🤣
Guuuurlllllll……I need my antioxidants! 🤣

I was eyeing these the other day! I usually get the BBQ but the Maui onion looks intriguing. Food tastes best in a car.
This is ME! I feel vindicated! I’m a one cookie is adequate, my hubs is a whole sleeve guy. So YES! I hide my fav snacks. Thank you for freeing me!
Hahahaha, I actually laughed out loud here. My sister called me after she read this and felt the same way.

we must have had the exact same upbringing, ha!
HI JANE!! Man, I am such a fan...
Kate!! Same right back at you, of course. if you ever want to collaborate on something lmk! :D
I do I do! I just dm'ed you.
Yep. Twin has a massive sweet tooth and demolishes things in the night. I hide sweets and crunchy things in my desk top drawer, for backup.
I have a dear friend that eats in the night. It's really funny. But he doesn't like to talk about it...

But to be fair, most of the time I do share;))
Loved your article.
"that special something" really sums it up! And thank you :)

Naw, she's not concerned. She knows where my real issues lie!
Hilarious! Thanks for the smiles!

A hangry WASP!!! Such a rare breed. My MIL hides chocolate — but she always tells Holden where to find it.
Yes, and my brother, with the truly WASPY name of Hunter Parsons, gets even hangrier than I do!
My dad's friend emailed him after reading this "tell Kate it's not just the Jews" 😂

If Mike doesn't know about this, he does now. Airing out all our dirty laundry to the husbands, I love it!
I think he knows. He probably finds crumbled bbq bags and Spindrift cans in the car. Hiding my guilty pleasure from the kiddos is the bigger problem!
